What lights your way?

Waking at dawn to witness the day break is a special time for me. To be able to greet each day as darkness slowly turns to light is a great privilege and one I do not take for granted.

In the southern parts of the world, spring is beginning to show signs with the presence of new growth but here in the north, we enter the season of gathering the fruits of summer, storing the seeds for winter, and of making shelter for the months ahead.

Living so close to the natural world, as I do, I am more aware of just how miraculous life is and I don’t take any of the freedoms I experience now, as a given. I know these trees that surround me will not be here forever, the ability to move freely from one place to another on my own will become more difficult as age and wear and tear on the body slows me down. I might require even more light to see my way around as night turns into day and reading, writing and doing physical work may become more demanding of me. That time has not yet come. However, governments change, laws are revoked, and the ability to express an opinion, a thought, an idea becomes a threat. Light and life become tenuous and, at worst, expendable. As we marked the equinox this month and the International Day of Peace on 21 September, I know that there is still so much more to do.

But, whilst I have the light to show me a way forward, I will wake each day at dawn and try to make something of it. How fortunate I am!

What lights your way?

  1. Family and friends light my way; my collaboration with colleagues in Canada both lights my way and enlightens my ways of being and thinking, as do you Patricia. Thank you.

  2. I’m watching the roses thrive in our southern spring after their pruning in late winter. My garden grounds me each morning, the inherent goodness in human beings and the capacity of humanity to care in spite of the ugly and hateful ones is what guides my way in this world.

    1. Nature, is definitely grounding. Thanks so much for your comment, Ashley. The world needs those who lead from a position of care, as you mention above.
